Fertilizer will be available in all NCPB depots by Monday, says government

The Agriculture Ministry says new supplies of fertilizer will be available in the country on Monday.
While acknowledging a fertilizer shortage in the country, Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh said many National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots, particularly in key maize-growing regions, are facing shortages.
Ronoh assured farmers that essential steps have been taken to replenish the stock.
"By Monday, all NCPB depots will be fully stocked to guarantee farmers easy access to supplies," he said.
He further emphasized that proactive measures are in place to prevent future shortages, enhance distribution efficiency, and bolster food security.
Reiterating the government’s dedication to supporting farmers, he highlighted ongoing efforts to implement timely interventions that promote a resilient agricultural sector.
Earlier this week, President William Ruto signed the Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2025, which includes funding for the initiative, where Sh6.6 billion was allocated for the fertilizer subsidy program.
The announcement comes as farmers in key agricultural regions of the North and South Rift, known as Kenya's grain basket, have been gearing up for the planting season following the arrival of long rains.
In January 2025, the Ministry said it had commenced the procurement and distribution of 7.2 million bags of subsidized fertilizer for the 2025 long rains season.
It added that an estimated Sh20 billion is required to meet the country’s demand for fertilizer which stands at an average 12 million bags annually.
